Erri De Luca is one of the latest incarnations of a personality capable to leave a consistent trace in the culture of the Twentieth century and that nowadays seems irremediably extinguished: the personality of the intellectual. He is an artist who doesn’t put limits to his imagination into writing, but who also spreads its action to the society surrounding him, trying to leave a sign in it. At the same time, De Luca, born in Naples (“I am off-key”, he says) has music in his DNA. To pull his secret passion out, a musician like Stefano Di Battista was necessary: Di Battista is a jazz player who never limited his work to the jazz domain, but who has always looked with curiosity to all directions, even the more unattended ones (fact proved also by his several presences at Festival di Sanremo). Together, De Luca and Di Battista produced “La musica insieme”, work published by Feltrinelli as book, DVD and CD: reflections, songs and musics then turned into a complete theatre play.

“Stefano Di Battista, traveler and sax player, asked me by the means of our common friend Michele Afferrante a text to put into music. I was collecting pages for a new poem booklet, but none of the finished poems was appropriate for that. One evening, in a seaside town, I created a poem page about the Mediterranean sea: ‘Essere di Medit’. It was perfect for the purpose and I sent it to Stefano. A few days later he called me to make me listen to it with the music of Maurizio Fabrizio and the voice of Nicky Nicolai. That page had been turned into the sound waves of a musical tide.” (Erri De Luca)
