DORANTES • piano
RENAUD GARCIA-FONS • double bass
Paseo a dos is the first album released by Dorantes and Renaud Garcia-Fons, a duo that started to perform on tour a few years ago. Both virtuous and original, their musical performances create sounds that bring to a Mediterranean trip, which goes from jazz to flamenco. Spanish Dorantes knows how to make the piano an innovative tool for flamenco, a genre to which he devoted himself for years by reinventing the rules and breaking the traditional limits. French Garcia-Fons is considered a great double bass player, and plays this instrument with great technique and skills, producing a sound rich in musicality and expression, immediately identifiable and mostly inspired by the sounds of traditional Mediterranean, or from Eastern Europe and North Africa. David Dorantes was born in Seville in 1969 from a family of performers and studied flamenco at Real Conservatorio Superior de Música, looking for a synthesis between flamenco and traditional and avant-garde music. The success came in 1998 with the disc Orobroy, hailed as “innovative”. He has performed at major festivals such as European Music Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Connexions Festival in Barcelona and Bruges Jazz Festival. Renaud Garcia-Fons, described by the critics as the “Paganini of the double bass”, was born in 1962 in Paris from Catalan parents, who introduced him to piano and guitar at the age of five. He studied double bass at the Paris Conservatory and has performed as a soloist and in orchestras. By the age of 21, after having been awarded by the Ministry of French Culture “Professor of Double Bass”, he works as a freelance musician with big names of Flamenco: in the 9 albums released, he brings out his big talent as a composer. He also has conducted major orchestras all over the world.
