Fascinated by the musicals of Broadway, Simona Molinari started studying singing as a teenager, particularly attracted by jazz music, improvisation and the Afro American vocal style. Taking a different path from many of her colleagues, she dedicated herself to classical music later on, and accomplished her studies at the Conservatorio Alfredo Casella in L’Aquila (Italy).
Her curriculum vitae is a long list of important collaborations, performances and awards. Simona has collaborated with extraordinary artists such as Al Jarreau, Gilberto Gil, Peter Cincotti, Andrea Bocelli, Ornella Vanoni, Lelio Luttazzi, Renzo Arbore, Massimo Ranieri, Fabrizio Bosso, Franco Cerri, Stefano Di Battista, Dado Moroni, Roberto Gatto, Roy Paci and Danny Diaz.
She has also performed at Blue Note in New York and Tokyo, at Teatro Estrada in Moscow, at Grappa’s Cellar in Hong Kong, at the Brown Sugar in Shanghai, as well as at Umbria Jazz and at Wind Music Award. In Italy she has been awarded several prizes, such as the Premio Lunezia Jazz d’Autore, the Premio Mogol, the Premio Carosone, the Premio Musicultura and the Premio Tenco.
Simona Molinari’s first success in Italy starts with the hit In cerca di te and her participation in the 2009 and 2013 editions of the Sanremo festival, with the songs Egocentrica (2009) and La felicità (2013), in a duo with the New York jazz player Peter Cincotti.
Simona also played the role of Mary Magdalen in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar at Sistina theatre in Rome and in 2015 she played the lead in the tour Loving Ella, dedicated to the legendary figure of Ella Fitzgerald.
“Ten years have passed since my debut”, Simona says “and looking at the pictures of my performances in the Sanremo festivals, I realize how things have changed since then, and I am part of this process. But my commitment still remains the same.” This is the way Simona Molinari describes her love for music, naturally, for her work and, more importantly, for her audience and for her long-time, partners, the Mosca Jazz Band, which will perform with her.
